God in the Workplace

God in the workplace

Most Christians have a thought that secular work is of no significance and that only Pastors, Ministers, Missionaries and other full-time Gospel workers do meaningful work. The major problem with this idea is that, Christians who believe this view tend to get disinterested in their secular work and do not enjoy it and fail to glorify God in it.

If you are a Christian, your entire life should be a ministry. Everything that you do in thoughts and words and actions is supposed to bring glory to God. There is no secular and sacred division in your life. Every part of you and your life should be for God's glory.

All sort of legitimate work is good and you can use any legitimate work environment to glorify God. If you are a Christian, the world is watching you. If you are not providing for your own self and your family, what sort of impression will it create about your God?

1 Timothy 5:8But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel.

2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

But the purpose of work goes beyond provision for you and your family. It is about your calling and purpose.

Finding God in the Workplace: Before the Fall, Work existed

Work is one of God's good ideas. Even before sin entered the world, work was there. We are called to create and work as God's representative. God Himself worked for six days and rested on the seventh day. God created Adam and asked him to work in Eden. God did not ask Adam to just sit idle all the time. Doing the work that God has given you can become an act of worship if you do it with a proper attitude.

Genesis 2:2- And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

Genesis 2:15- And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

Finding God in the Workplace: Serving God with Right Motivation

Paul did not ask all the believers to come with Him to preach full time. He asked all Christians to serve the Lord wherever they are called to. Read Colossians 3:23.

Some have a calling to preach full time as missionaries and various other roles. Some have a calling to be workplace ministers of Jesus Christ. This doesn't mean that you should go to work only for the purpose of preaching the gospel to someone directly. When you work with a mindset that you are working for God and do your best to give your best at work, God will be glorified. But, if you work solely to please people and gain earthly rewards, you cannot expect your reward in Heaven. God sees your motives and attitude.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 - Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for [there is] no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Colossians 3:23 - And whatsoever you do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

Finding God in the Workplace: Christians are needed everywhere

Christians are called to be the Salt and Light on earth. We cannot be the salt and light of the world if we are totally away from the world. God has put us where we are or a purpose. We are to walk in the World differently as ambassadors of Christ. The World needs Set Apart Christian Doctors, Teachers, Software Engineers, Students, Drivers, Police Officers, Pilots etc. We cannot be Christians and be no different from the World. When you Shine by the Power of Christ, God is Glorified.

Matthew 5:13-16- Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt has lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Finding God in the Workplace: Many(Including me) heard the Gospel in their School, College and Workplace

I got saved in my School, through a Teacher. Everyone is not going to come to a Church building or a Christian Meeting to hear the Gospel. You may be the Gospel carrier for your Co-Worker.

Colossians 4:6 - Let your speech [be] always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Invite God to your secular work environment and glorify God in the workplace, where we are called to spend most part of our time. You are wasting your time if you don't let God be part of your secular work.
